Give Your Bed A Canopy
A canopy made of sheets, curtains, or other fabric above and surrounding your bed can make it a private, cozy, and fun little escape! There are several ways and styles you can create your canopy, but we will describe two here. If you want a smaller, round canopy over the headboard of your bed, use an embroidery hoop and buy or sew gauzy curtains. To install, fit the fabric panels onto the hoop and hang the piece using hardware such as a pot rack hook. A second type of canopy can cover the width of your bed from side to side, hanging over whatever part of the bed you would like. To do this, fasten a pair of swing-arm curtain rods to the wall, a few inches below the ceiling, one on each side. Then loosely drape gauzy fabric from one rod to the other across the bed, ensuring the part hanging over the bed isn’t too low. You’ll then have a section of curtain on either side of the bed that hangs down to the floor, providing privacy, and a cozy, majestic vibe. With these DIY bed canopy methods, you can have a new addition above your bed without having to alter your bed frame, and the project can be done in a weekend!
Washi Tape Wall Art
Washi tape is a type of decorative adhesive tape made from Japanese paper; “wa” meaning Japanese and “shi” meaning paper. Made from Japanese plant fibers that are turned into sheets of paper, washi tape is durable, waterproof, and heatproof, and it tears easily by hand. Typically used for crafting or journaling, this unique tape can be used to decorate your apartment walls by making shapes and designs. The fun is in choosing tape rolls with your favorite patterns, icons, shapes, and colors, and applying it to the walls or ceiling in your home to make the scenes and artwork you’ll smile at. Washi tape is ideal for rentals, as it peels off without causing damage or leaving residue, and it’s reusable! You can find plenty of guides online on how to utilize this unique artistic embellishment. Use it as an alternative to wallpaper or posters if you’d like!
DIY Full Length Mirror (add silk flowers / garland and fairy lights)
Start with a wood board that’s about 43 by 13 inches, and make a frame for the mirror with wood trim along the edges of the board. You can make small wooden balls spaced out along the border to further add detail to it. Choose the style you want to paint the finished wood in, and the border can look like your own unique wood carving. Glue your mirror in the center of the frame, and then it’s personalization and decoration time. An idea is to hot glue various colored silk flowers or a garland around the mirror frame and add “fairy” lights, or whatever you would like. Full length mirrors have the advantage of being placed really anywhere in your apartment, to add light, make a small area seem bigger, to reflect pictures on your walls, and to pick your look for the day. If you bought a specially designed mirror from a furniture store, it would surely cost much more than assembling a personalized one yourself.
DIY Sunburst Mirror
This unique mirror can brighten up any room! Choose a round mirror, any size you like, with a thicker border all around it. Get short, medium, and long lengths of wooden paintsticks to arrange in an alternating fashion on the border around the mirror. Glue the bigger sticks first, spacing them out, then the smaller ones to create the sun’s rays. Lastly, paint the sticks and the mirror edges; an idea is to use metallic gold and silver colors. Hang it on a wall, and use it as a statement decoration piece, complemented by other furniture or artwork around it, or have it stand alone to brighten up a blank wall or reflect light, pictures on the opposing wall, or even the sun itself!
A Tassel Chandelier
For tassels, you can either make them yourself, in which case there are lots of tutorials online on how to do so, or buy them. For this project, you won’t actually be making a real chandelier, but if you wanted, you could glue tassels around the bottom edge of your real chandelier! For the purpose of decoration and enjoyment, this chandelier will be made using three different sized (biggest on top to smallest on bottom) brass rings or embroidery hoops. Choose three different colors of tassels for each chandelier ring. Use long metal chains to join the three rings so they are held up, and attach the whole piece to the ceiling. Then fasten your tassels to the rings / hoops, and hang it in a fun place like your bedroom, living room, or entryway.
Pom Pom Tassel Wall Hanging
For a whimsical, soft, and cute artistic decoration to brighten up the wall in any room, use different colors and sizes of pom poms and tassels, pieces of thin white rope, a wooden dowel, hot glue, and a wall tack. You can buy a pom pom maker or create them yourself; there are tutorials for both online. Make as many as you want, using cheerful colors. You can even add glitter. Take a wooden dowel stick and fasten the tassels and pom poms using white rope pieces, hot glue, and tying them. You can find tutorials online showing how to attach your pom poms and tassels to make the wall hanging. You will also find lots of inspirational ideas online and at craft stores for the shape and materials you can use for this project. This is so fun as you get to personalize it and it truly brightens up any space and looks like you had a professional craftsman in. You can show off to your family, friends, and guests that it was all you, though!
A Wood Crate TV Console
If you can’t mount your big screen TV on the wall and could use a little extra storage, make a wood crate TV console! Buy 4 to 6 crate boxes that will support the length of the bottom of your TV when put together, as they will also be your TV stand. Join the wooden crate boxes together with screws, place your TV on top, and fill the crate cubbies with your entertainment stash, decorations, and warm and fluffy cozy things. You can also buy a console with pre-made storage cubbies, add wheels to it, and paint it or use a special finish so the color compliments your living room. You can find tutorials and more ideas online!
DIY Bathroom Storage Ladder
If you share a bathroom or just want an out-of-the-ordinary place to store your toiletries or hang your towels, build your own bathroom storage ladder! Choose your desired height and width, and assemble your ladder using wood pieces. The internet and home furnishing stores are great resources! Paint your ladder or apply a finishing stain for a pleasant color that goes well with your bathroom. Hang wire baskets with your shower or skincare essentials over the ladder bars and your towels. Prop it up against a free wall and add some decorations. Smart, compact, and easy to access!
DIY Wire Basket Side Table
Use a rustic side table to hold and display light weight items in any room with a wire basket and a wooden disc for the tabletop. Select a laundry hamper made out of sturdy wire. You can spray paint it for a pleasant color. Apply a stain to or paint the wooden disc top. Ensure the tabletop diameter can cover and fit well over the size of the wire bin. Affix the underside of the tabletop to the opening of the wire basket using metal fasteners.
Create An Entryway Hook Shelf
For an easy way to remember the little things you need before you leave your apartment each day, and for a quick dropoff of your things when you get home, install your own entryway hook shelf! You can put together or buy a unit with a shelf on top for keeping small grab-and-go items like keys, sunglasses, or toiletries, and with hooks or pegs to hang light jackets, purses, or hats. If you can’t attach your shelf to the wall with screws, use adhesive back hooks instead. Finish your entryway small storage shelf by hanging a large mirror over the top for last minute touch-ups before you head out. It adds a personalized touch and makes your space unique and efficient!
These are some gems when it comes to clever luxury penthouse apartment DIY projects. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it’s what makes you happy that is most important when it comes to how these additions turn out. Take luxury living at The Deco apartments to the next level this September, and don’t forget to show your friends and family your smart and stylish new handywork!
